Silent enemies: 5 dangerous diseases that are asymptomatic (you may not notice them)

The main problem of many serious diseases is that for a long time they may not declare themselves in any way. In our material, we analyze those of them with which you need to be on your guard in the first place.

The golden rule of prevention of any, even the most dangerous, disease is early diagnosis. However, not every one of them manifests itself at an early stage, so for a long time you may not even suspect that you are suffering from something really serious. Together with the general practitioner, cardiologist “SM-Clinic” Daria Dmitrievna Sergeeva compiled a list with the most difficult ailments that should not be underestimated.

High blood pressure (hypertension)

Hypertension is often asymptomatic. High blood pressure is the main risk factor for heart attacks and strokes. Also, with hypertension, the risk of renal failure and retinal pathologies increases. It is especially dangerous when, with undiagnosed hypertension, a person tries to drown out the symptoms by taking painkillers, but the cause remains, and the condition may worsen even more.

Healthy people under 40 years of age should measure blood pressure 1 time a year, after 40 years or in the presence of risk factors (overweight, diabetes mellitus, hypertension in close relatives) – 2-3 times a year. If high blood pressure is detected (more than 140/90 mmHg), you need to contact a cardiologist

Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, or atrial fibrillation, is one of the most frequent cardiac arrhythmias. It occurs more often in the elderly than in the young, and is felt as a frequent irregular heartbeat. However, in many cases, patients do not notice a disturbed heartbeat.

At the same time, atrial fibrillation significantly increases the risk of stroke. And in 10-30% of cases (according to various studies), the patient learns about the presence of atrial fibrillation when the stroke has already occurred. For early diagnosis, you need to do an ECG once a year, and in doubtful cases, the doctor will recommend monitoring the ECG during the day.

Oncological diseases

Malignant neoplasms in the initial stages are also often asymptomatic. Symptoms such as weight loss, a long-term increase in body temperature, the appearance of new and incomprehensible pain sensations, weakness, pallor, chronic constipation and others allow to suspect a malignant process.

Unfortunately, it is not enough to simply “donate blood for cancer markers” to detect cancer — in most cases, this analysis has low sensitivity and specificity. That is, both a positive test result is possible in the absence of the disease, and a negative result in its presence.

In addition, it is important to understand that cancer is not one disease, but more than a hundred different diseases, different in frequency, speed of development, and favorable prognosis. Therefore, WHO and cancer societies from different countries are developing different protocols for cancer screening. For example, HPV testing is used for women as the preferred method for detecting cervical cancer and mammography for detecting breast cancer.

Atherosclerosis of blood vessels

In the initial stages, this disease is also asymptomatic. At the same time, depending on the localization, the deposition of cholesterol plaques in the vessels can lead to the development of heart attacks, strokes, intermittent lameness. Therefore, it is important to regularly monitor the level of cholesterol in the blood. At an elevated level, ultrasound of the vessels of the neck and the vessels of the legs is recommended to identify existing atherosclerotic plaques.

Sudden cardiac death

There is a group of diseases that are quite rare, but they manifest themselves as sudden cardiac arrest at a young age without any previous diseases. As a rule, these are genetically determined heart diseases that alter the work of the heart muscle, making it more likely that dangerous cardiac arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation) occur.

These include: long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, arrhythmogenic dysplasia of the right ventricle, etc. It is possible to suspect such a syndrome according to family history: if one of the close relatives suddenly died at a young age, this is a major risk factor.

Another dangerous symptom is episodes of loss of consciousness. To diagnose these syndromes, an ECG, ultrasound of the heart, and daily ECG monitoring are used. In case of detection of such a disease, it is recommended to perform an operation – implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator.
