Nutritionists explained which drinks are better to give up in order to keep the heart healthy for many years.
According to the American Heart Association, after the age of 40, the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases markedly due to various factors: from genetic predisposition to excess weight and physical inactivity. To keep your heart healthy, you need to be conscious not only about nutrition and physical activity, but also about the drinks you drink every day. Nutritionists experts told which ones are better to exclude or limit.
“Limiting alcohol consumption will help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides, which are associated with the risk of heart disease,” says nutritionist Jonathan Valdez in a comment to Eat This, Not That!
The opinions of scientists differ as to whether it is worth drinking alcoholic beverages at all. Some argue that it is better to try to eliminate drinking completely, others insist on the benefits of a glass of dry red wine a couple of times a week. It is better to rely on your well – being and the recommendations of the attending physician .
“Drinking energy drinks can cause changes in heartbeat and blood pressure. They can increase the QT interval, that is, the time it takes for the heart to recharge between beats. A long QT interval can lead to an increased risk of stroke,” explains Jonathan Valdez.
And if there are different opinions about alcohol, then all doctors speak unanimously about energy drinks: it is better to completely exclude such drinks. Instead, experts suggest drinking strong tea. “Black and green tea reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke by 10-20%,” notes another nutrition expert Caroline Suzy.
Vegetable packaged juices
The thing is that most of these juices contain too much sodium, which, according to Valdez, increases blood pressure.
But freshly squeezed juices without sodium and preservatives, on the contrary, have a positive effect on the work of the heart. “Drinking pure fresh juice can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke,” Jonathan emphasizes.
Drinks with trans fats
These include, for example, vegetable cream and milk, milkshakes, sweet coffee drinks, etc. “Avoiding drinks that contain trans fats prevents an increase in LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad cholesterol”) and reduces the risk of heart disease,” Valdez notes.
