Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe had countless fans who would gladly lead the famous beauty down the aisle. However, outside the spotlight, nee Norma Jean was unhappy in love and divorced three times in her short life. And, of course, as a recognized icon of style and a standard of beauty, Monroe influenced the wedding fashion of her time and continues to inspire brides of our era. We tell three love stories with an unhappy ending and show in which outfits Marilyn said “yes” to her chosen ones.

Wedding with Jim Doherty

Marilyn’s first husband was James Dougherty, a Los Angeles police officer. They started dating in January 1942 and got married in June of the same year, just 18 days after Marilyn (at that time still Norma Jean Baker) celebrated her 16th birthday.

James’ family lived next door to Grace McKee, a friend of the mother of the future Marilyn Gladys, who often stayed in psychiatric hospitals. After Norma visited several shelters, Grace decided to take the girl to the family and issued temporary custody. However, after a while Grace decided to get married and move to another state, and the girl turned out to be a hindrance, since she could not legally leave California. In order for Norma Jean not to have to return to the shelter again, Grace suggested that James, who lives next door, marry the girl. “We decided to get married so she wouldn’t have to go back to the orphanage, but we were really in love,” James later said in an interview.

The wedding image of Norma Jean corresponded to the fashion of the 40s: a 16-year-old brunette wore an A-line maxi dress with long sleeves and lace inserts on the skirt.  The modest look was complemented by a short veil and a retro hairstyle typical of the 40s.

In 1946, the actress posed in her wedding outfit for a photo shoot

From the outside, it seemed that the couple had an idyllic marriage, and they were destined to spend their lives together in family bliss. Jimmy later said, “We were madly in love with each other. I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world. It was like a honeymoon that lasted a year.” But after Jimmy joined the Marines in 1943, everything changed. Norma Jean dutifully wrote letters to her husband several times a week, but soon got bored without him. She got a job at a factory where she checked parachutes and prepared planes for flight.

Wedding with Joe DiMaggio

In 1952, Marilyn met the famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio. The athlete saw a photo of Monroe and asked the photographer to arrange a date with her. Marilyn didn’t really want to meet Joe, because she was skeptical of him, but he exceeded all her expectations, and they quickly fell in love with each other.

The outfit for Marilyn’s second wedding was much more modest – she chose an elegant chocolate-colored suit with a white Peter Pan collar made of ermine. The outfit was completely different from her usual style with deep cutouts and tight silhouettes that we are used to seeing. It is believed that this was an attempt to please her new husband. Interestingly, at the wedding, Marilyn appeared in an outfit that she had already worn earlier – she tried on the same suit for a meeting with the king of Greece just a couple of months ago.

The couple’s marriage did not last long

The infamous marriage with Joe lasted only 274 days, but DiMaggio did not stop trying to return his beloved even after the divorce. It was rumored that they planned to remarry in August 1962-the month of Monroe’s death. It is said that after the death of the Hollywood star, Joe was heartbroken and twice a week delivered fresh roses to her grave until his death in 1999. And in 1998, Monroe’s second wedding outfit was sold at auction for $ 33,350.

Wedding with Arthur Miller

The third choice of the Hollywood star was the playwright Arthur Miller. Her film studio tried to convince the actress to stay away from a man with a dubious reputation, since he was under the scrutiny of the FBI, but Monroe was adamant. On June 29, 1956, their civil wedding ceremony took place, and two days later a wedding ceremony was held according to Jewish tradition, which was held at the New York home of Kay Brown, Miller’s literary agent.

Monroe appeared in front of the guests in an elegant medium-length dress with gathered translucent sleeves, combining glamour and sophistication, and a tight bodice emphasized the female figure of the American beauty. The outfit was complemented with gloves and a playful veil, which made the image of Monroe even more charming. And on the rings of the lovers it was written “Now forever.” However, the third marriage also turned out to be unsuccessful for Monroe: six years later, Arthur and Marilyn divorced.
