What kind of nutrition will help normalize the thyroid gland? And what should be taken into account when going on a diet originally intended for patients with autoimmune diseases?

Every year we discover more and more new diets, detox complexes and nutrition systems that allow us to lose extra pounds in a few days. However, all these seemingly innovative principles of nutrition as a result can become a serious threat to health and rather negatively affect its condition.

Recently, short—term diets have been fading into the background, and we are starting to think more and more about a balanced diet on a regular basis – about a diet that will start a new lifestyle. An alternative may be the Hashimoto diet, originally intended for patients with an autoimmune disease affecting the thyroid gland.

How to eat on the Hashimoto diet?

In Hashimoto’s disease, the thyroid gland is inflamed and weakened. An abundant intake of iodine can have an extremely negative effect on her condition, provoking an overstrain of the organ. At the beginning, all foods containing a large amount of iodine should be removed from the diet, namely:

  • Seafood

  • Fish

  • Eggs

  • Seaweed, sushi, salads and ready meals with seaweed

  • Iodized salt

  • Prepared foods with iodized salt (carefully study the composition of dishes)

  • Regular cow’s milk

  • Soybean oil, sunflower and rapeseed oil

  • Peanut

  • Flour, sweet

  • Sausage products

  • Fast food, salty and fatty foods

A low-carb diet will help relieve the stress that the thyroid gland is in. This diet minimizes the intake of iodine into the body and normalizes its condition.

In order for the production of nutrients and antioxidants to be active and contribute to the regeneration of the thyroid gland, nutritional therapy is introduced. Hashimoto’s diet “teaches” your body to handle iodine anew, and this process takes place by obtaining the necessary elements, vitamins that reduce inflammation and increase the antioxidant capacity of the thyroid gland “).

The diet consists of the following products:

  • Fruits (especially citrus fruits, peaches, pineapples, apples)

  • Vegetables (preferably not starchy: zucchini, carrots, asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, artichokes, broccoli, avocado)

  • Berries

  • Olive and linseed oils

  • Garlic and onion

  • Greens, in particular, arugula

  • Red meat

  • Kombucha / kombucha

  • Broth on the bone

  • Gherkins, sauerkraut, kimchi

  • Fish can be included in the diet, but no more than 2 times a week

Are there any disadvantages to the diet?

Since part of the Hashimoto’s diet is limited in the nutrition system, the body does not receive enough vitamins and nutrients, so it is necessary to include dietary supplements in the diet — such as fish oil, vitamin C, E, D, omega-3, zinc, iron and selenium. The selection should be carried out by your doctor in small doses in order to fix the positive or negative effect of the reception and make the right conclusion about what dosage the result depends on.

To fix it, it is necessary to maintain physical activity — and not only sports are suitable, but also hiking in combination with sleep normalization. If there are no contraindications, a sauna visit will be an excellent option. It is also worth giving up smoking, junk food, alcohol and fluoride-containing products (table salt, black tea, toothpaste with fluoride).

The key to eliminating any disease is a proper, balanced diet, tailored to your needs and characteristics of the body. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can eliminate or prevent the causes of diseases. The main thing is to listen to your body and carefully approach the choice of food and your diet. And, of course, before you go on any diet, consult your doctor.
