From the family outing of Princess Diana with babies William and Harry to the stylish images of Queen Elizabeth in the 80s, we recall the most iconic appearances of monarchs at traditional Easter services.

The Easter service in Windsor occupies a special place in the schedule of the British royal family. As a rule, on Easter Sunday, the Queen, together with her royal relatives, attends a church service in St. George’s Chapel, a 14th—century building located in the lower part of Windsor Castle. In the morning, crowds of fans gather here to greet the royal family before the ceremony, after which the Queen receives a bouquet of flowers from local children who are also present at the service.

The Queen attends church services with several members of her family. At various times, she was joined by many of her grandchildren and some of their spouses, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Peter and Autumn Phillips, Zara Tindall and others.

There is another important tradition — on Holy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, the Queen visits another cathedral in the UK to distribute special cash gifts to local pensioners. During the service, the monarch distributes gifts according to the number of years she has lived: for example, in 2019, when she turned 93, she distributed 93 pence in cash to 93 men and 93 women in recognition of their contribution to society and the church. The ceremony has been held every year in England since 600, and since the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth II in 1952, traditions have been followed throughout the country.

In 2020, the royal family had to significantly revise their Easter habits: due to the outbreak of coronavirus, public events have to be canceled. Therefore, both last year and this year, the royal family decided to celebrate Easter in private, self-isolating in their estates.
We decided to be nostalgic and remember the brightest appearances of the royals at Easter services. Our selection includes charming paired images of Princess Diana and little Prince William, impeccable outfits of Sophie of Wessex and rather bold mini—length dresses chosen by Princess Beatrice.
