Big breasts, blush and thinness: 7 “shortcomings”, because of which women were not married in the Middle Ages

Modern concepts of beauty and attractiveness are strikingly different from those that were adopted in the past. We tell you by what criteria brides were chosen in the Middle Ages, and what external features deprived women of the right to marry.

Today, there are practically no clear boundaries of attractiveness — each person is individual and beautiful in his own way, regardless of the type of figure, hair color, eyes, age, but in the past things were different. We are looking into what features, which are the norm these days, could be a reason not to marry a woman (and sometimes to accuse her of witchcraft and put her on trial) in the medieval era.

Big breasts

Large breasts were not particularly appreciated in the Middle Ages. If today there are a lot of ways to emphasize her beauty, then in the past women, on the contrary, were looking for ways to hide their forms. Bandaging, tight lace-up bodices and corsets, form-concealing clothing and even crippling procedures designed to stop breast development were used — for example, the use of lead plates as a press, which (with regular use) deformed the mammary glands and prevented their growth. It is difficult to imagine what torments women experienced at that time and what health consequences such experiments had.

It was only in the XVIII century that the tradition of showing and emphasizing breasts in every possible way (even for going to church) began to rapidly gain momentum, and women were able to leave some painful rituals in the past (however, it must be understood that comfort and safety were still out of the question at that time).

Thinness

Today, many girls are actively involved in sports and adhere to the norms of proper nutrition, controlling the level of consumption in order to achieve a slim and toned body. However, in the Middle Ages, such an approach would hardly have been appreciated — at that time, thinness, slimness, a thin waist and graceful curves of the body were considered a disadvantage, and “faceless” figures without obvious accents on the waist or chest were held in high esteem. This fashion was conditioned by the requirements of the church — external beauty was considered sinful, and the main thing was the spiritual fulfillment of a person.

It is noteworthy that in Russia, unlike in European countries, not just a shapeless figure was valued, but a sporty and “powerful” physique, as well as wide hips — it was believed that such a body structure helped women to produce healthy offspring, as well as engage in physical labor.

Moles on the face and body

Charming moles of Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford, Dita Von Teese and many other celebrities are not only not considered a defect these days, but are also copied by millions of fans. However, in the past, moles and birthmarks were considered flaws and even had the fame of “devil’s marks— – it was by their presence that “witches” were identified, who were later tortured and certain death. It is not difficult to guess that women with similar marks on their face and body were not enviable brides.

Red hair

In the Middle Ages, red-haired people were considered “thieves of hellfire” — this fact automatically ranked the bearers of red hair as witches and sorcerers, and their fate was unenviable. Often such people were forced under torture to admit the presence of magical abilities, after which they were publicly executed. By the way, if just a red-haired girl sometimes managed to escape death, then the owners of fiery hair and green eyes had practically no chance of salvation, since such a combination spoke of one hundred percent belonging to the dark forces.

Age

Today, women have the opportunity to postpone starting a family at a later date, but during the Middle Ages, 18-year-old girls were already considered “late” brides. The period from 14 to 16 years was considered optimal, but in some cases 12-year-old girls also got married. However, the age of marriage largely depended on the region of residence of the bride, as well as on the financial capabilities of her family — more affluent residents of cities married their daughters much later than residents of villages with low incomes.

Expressive look

In the Middle Ages, a high forehead, coupled with light eyes and the absence of outlined eyebrows, was considered extremely aesthetic. To achieve ideal parameters, women artificially “pushed back” the hairline by plucking them, lightened or got rid of eyebrows and avoided eye makeup. However, in order to make the look more piercing, the women all used one secret – belladonna drops, which soon led to monstrous pain in the eyes, blindness and death.

Healthy blush

The modern beauty industry offers a lot of cosmetics that could emphasize a natural blush, but in the Middle Ages these products would hardly have been popular. The fact is that at that time pale, almost white skin was valued, and women had to achieve a lightening effect with the help of means based on relatively harmless lemon juice and its more dangerous analogues – lead and arsenic. In addition, bloodletting and eating paper were popular.
